Major Work Characteristics/Summary of Position

Responsibilities will include teaching undergraduate and graduate trombone students, collaborating with the brass faculty, and actively performing and engaging in scholarly/creative activities. Additional responsibilities include all service related activities associated with a tenure-track position such as recruiting, advising, participation in committees, and other forms of institutional service. Other duties may be assigned based on the successful candidate’s strengths and areas of expertise.

The Dana School of Music was founded nearly 150 years ago in 1869, making it one of the oldest music programs in the United States. More than fifty faculty and staff maintain a tradition of conservatory-style music training in a metropolitan university setting. Dana offers Bachelor of Music degrees in composition, music education, music performance, jazz studies, and recording technology. Candidates may also earn the Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in music history, music theory, or applied music. At the graduate level, programs leading to the Master of Music degree are available to full or part time students in the areas of composition, theory, education, history, performance (including conducting), and jazz studies.

The College of Creative Arts and Communication (CCAC), Youngstown State University, includes the Departments of Art, Communication, Theater & Dance, and the Dana School of Music. The College currently enrolls over 1,000 students pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees and minor concentrations. The CCAC programs approximately 400 events annually in numerous locations locally and regionally. On-campus venues feature multiple visual art galleries, three halls and theaters for the performing arts, and a new multi-million dollar sports broadcasting facility. Performances and events are also housed in the DeYor Performing Arts Center and historic Stambaugh Auditorium.

Minimum Qualifications

A completed doctoral degree is required for the probationary tenure track contract.

Applicants who are ABD or currently pursuing a doctoral degree will be considered for a degree completion contract which is a one-year contract that may be renewed one time. Upon completion of the degree, the faculty member shall be issued a probationary tenure track contract.

Desired Qualifications

Candidates should demonstrate excellence in solo and chamber performance and offer documented success of recruitment and retention of students. Teaching experience at the college level is preferred.
